Tena koe! What makes us unique? “He tangata, he tangata, he tangata.” – “Tis people, tis people, tis people.”
First and foremost is the respect that is afforded by everyone to everyone, children and adults alike.
Secondly, through their strengths and interests, children are continually developing knowledge, ideas, relationships in a warm, embracing manner. ICT is an area that our children flourish in, both in terms of use of equipment and sharing of knowledge. This is regularly extended into their homes where whanau have taken the opportunity to participate alongside them.
Thirdly, we are one of four kindergartens in Otara, and we have a strong relationship with each other. Over this last year we have had joint gatherings, celebrating special events i.e. Matariki (which is now an annual event), blessings of carvings at one of the kindergartens, etc. We welcome everyone and anyone who would like to visit, as we love to talk about all the wonderful things that happen here.
Our kindergarten is situated in East Tamaki, which is a lower socio-economic area. We are in close proximity to a Te Kohanga Reo and between us is the local Primary, Mayfield School. Children love to come and visit at the fence, especially children who have been through the kindergarten. The make up of our kindergarten is mainly Polynesian and Maori children and whanau. The kindergarten has been in the community for over 20 years, but in the last six years (approx.) we have moved from a ‘school prefab’ and into a new building and grounds. Our rolls have recently decreased to 30:30 with 2 trained staff who between us have a wealth of experience and knowledge within the Early Childhood sector.
