Birdwood Kindergarten is very well resourced with large landscaped grounds. The equipment available to the children provides stimulating and challenging learning experiences. Technology allows the teaching team to document children’s learning through attractive wall displays, planning books and children’s portfolios.
The children at Birdwood Kindergarten are friendly and very sociable towards each other, the teaching team and visitors. They are quick to greet their friends when they arrive, help each other when they are having difficulty and respond quickly to aid their friends when hurt.
The ethnic make up is a mix of Maori, New Zealand European, the Pacific Islands, Asian and African. Kathy and Melanie embrace all of these cultures, and provide a wonderful and diverse learning environment.
The main strength of the Kindergarten is the teachers’ knowledge they have gained in a variety of curriculum areas while studying at Auckland University. This content knowledge has provided children with learning opportunities that have encouraged them to become confident, competent and abstract thinkers.
The teaching team has a long term working relationship and have been together teaching for 7 years. The Head Teacher, Kathy holds a Bachelor of Education in Teaching. The teacher, Melanie holds a Diploma in Early Childhood and is currently upgrading to a Bachelor of Education.
Birdwood Kindergarten is located next to Birdwood Primary School and the teaching team, and the new entrant teacher work hard at developing a professional, yet friendly relationship, helping our near five’s with the transition to school.
